Windmill Global Gas Lighter with Music, Japan 1960s

This is a vintage-style, novelty table lighter designed in the shape of a miniature globe. The item combines functionality with decorative art and likely features a mechanical music box. The item is typical of mid-20th-century (1960s–70s) Japanese cigarette accessories, combining heavy metal construction with intricate, dual-purpose engineering.

  • Lighter Mechanism: The globe opens along its equator to reveal a working Windmill gas lighter mechanism inside. A hinged top hemisphere (finished in polished silver) lifts open. Inside the top cover, a serrated flint wheel and striker assembly are visible, positioned alongside a gold-toned gas nozzle unit.

  • The Globe: In its closed state (second image), it looks like a stylized world map. It features silver-colored oceans and gold-toned continents (showing shapes resembling the Americas). The globe is held by a curved, gold-colored meridian ring with small, detailed knobs at the poles.

  • Stem and Base: The globe rests on a stepped, layered stem that transitions from silver to gold. The base is a heavy, cylindrical piece with a gold, brushed-metal finish. The top surface of the base (visible underneath the globe) features a speckled gold and silver pattern, resembling a starry sky.

  • Musical Feature: As indicated by the name "with Music," the thick cylindrical base houses a wind-up music box mechanism. When the music box is playing the globe is moving around the "sky".
